Dandruff is a very common skin condition that most people experience. It is caused due to weather, oily scalp, maintaining poor hygiene of hair. Wrong hair brushing and shampooing habits, dry skin, stress, and improper diets, make your scalp prone to dandruff.
There are mainly two types of dandruff – one that occurs due to the dryness of the scalp, while others caused due to the excessive production of oil on the scalp.
Dry skin and skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis can also cause dandruff. It is also believed that the common fungus Malassezia can trigger dandruff.
Of course, you can use an anti-dandruff shampoo to get the root of the dandruff problem quickly. But what about the side-effects?
Shampoos contain chemicals like zinc pyrithione, which target fungus and bacteria. Whereas, salicylic acid which loosens flakes so they can be washed away. There are plenty of natural remedies that are effective and chemical free.

1. Apply aloe vera gel and lemon juice to cure dandruff: –
Aloe vera has soothing and moisturizing properties which help to cool down the irritated scalp. Whereas, lemon has antifungal properties, which play a vital role in dandruff treatment.
Take one tablespoon of aloe vera gel and lemon juice. Mix well and apply it on your scalp. Massage thoroughly and leave it on the scalp for 30-40 minutes.
Wash it with a mild shampoo. Repeat this step at least once a week for better results.
2. Olive oil and coconut oil for dandruff: –
Olive oil is one of the best ingredients used to treat dandruff. It helps in moisturizing a dry scalp. Coconut oil contains vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that help to improve hair quality and eliminates dandruff.
Heat a cup of olive oil and coconut oil in equal proportion(depending upon the length of your hair) and massage it on your hair. Leave it for a few hours or overnight and wash it with shampoo. Repeat this process at least once a week until your dandruff disappears.
3. Lemon juice, Coconut oil, and Castor oil to get rid of dandruff: –
Lemon contains citric acid that removes dandruff and promotes a healthy scalp. Its acidic nature balances the scalp’s pH level. It helps in soothing irritation and reduces itching.
When lemon juice is combined with castor oil and coconut oil, lemon transforms into a powerful solution for dandruff.
Add one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to slightly warm coconut oil and castor oil. Apply it on your scalp with your fingertips and massage it gently in a circular motion.
Cover it with a shower cap or warm moist towel for 20 minutes. Rinse off with a mild shampoo. Repeat this process at least once a week for best results.
4. Tea tree oil for dandruff: –
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that contains a compound called Terpinen-4-Ol, which may help to reduce dandruff by suppressing the growth of fungi and bacteria on the scalp.
Take a little amount of shampoo and add a few drops of tea tree oil. Mix well and apply shampoo- oil mixture on your scalp. Wash it after 5 minutes. You can repeat this remedy once a week for better results.
A study has found that those who use 5% tea tree oil shampoo for four weeks saw a 41 percent reduction in dandruff. Tea tree has anti-inflammatory properties and a higher rate of dermal penetration, which makes it the best remedy for dandruff.
5. Baking soda for dandruff: – Baking soda is known to reduce the overactive fungi that can cause dandruff.
Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 ½ tablespoon baking soda and make a thin paste. Apply the paste on the scalp and massage it gently. Leave it for 2-3 minutes and wash it with cool water.
6. Onion for dandruff: –
Onion juice is an easy and natural remedy for treating dandruff and hair fall problem. It helps to remove white flakes on the scalp. Aloe vera helps in soothing an itchy scalp. It contains proteolytic enzymes that stimulate hair growth.
Mix aloe vera gel with onion juice in a bowl and apply this mixture to your scalp and massage it gently. Leave it for around 10 minutes and wash it with a mild shampoo.
7. Yogurt to get rid of dandruff naturally: –
Yogurt is a multivitamin rich food which contains high levels of lactic acid that is quite beneficial to treat dull and damaged hair.
Mix a cup yogurt and one whole egg in a bowl and apply it to your scalp and hair. Wash it after 30 minutes with a mild shampoo. This natural home remedy not only reduces dandruff naturally but is also known for thick hair growth.
8. Coconut oil and honey scalp scrub for dandruff: –
Coconut helps in preserving the hair’s natural proteins. It is also known to eliminate dandruff. According to a study, honey is a suitable ingredient for treating dandruff, owing to its antimicrobial properties.
Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, olive oil, and honey with 3 tablespoons of yogurt in a bowl to get a paste of medium consistency. Apply this paste to your scalp and massage it gently for about 10 minutes. Leave it for about 30-40 minutes, and then wash it out using a mild shampoo.

Mix equal quantity of apple cider vinegar and water in a bowl. Pour apple cider vinegar- water mixture on hair and scrub it into your scalp. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash it off with water. Repeat this process twice a week to get an effective result.
Washing your hair with apple cider vinegar helps you to get rid of dandruff naturally. The acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH levels of your scalp, making it harder for the yeast to grow.
11. Egg yolk:-
Biotin is one of the best sources of vitamin that helps to treat dandruff. Egg yolk being a great source of biotin not only reduces dandruff but also condition your hair and make it healthier. Whereas lemon contains vitamin B, C, and antioxidants that cleanse the scalp and open up clogged pores.
Mix 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with 1 egg yolk and apply the mixture on your scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap for half an hour. Then wash your hair thoroughly with a good shampoo. You might need to wash your hair twice to remove odor.
